Shock Wave Therapy for Treatment of Foot and Ankle Conditions
نویسنده
چکیده
!i£l AJBS'JrRA CT Shock wave therapy is a relatively new treatment of foot and ankle pain. An acoustic sound wave similar to one used for lithotripsy can cause a hyperanalgesia effect reducing pain and can cause breakdown and neovascularization of c1u'onically damaged tissue. T1u'ee commercial sources are available for musculoskeletal applications. To date, the treatment seams to be effective for soft tissue pain. Within the United States shock wave therapy has been licensed for plantar fasciitis and has been used outside the United States for other foot and ankle tendonopathies. The pain must be well localized to I area for effective treatment. This article reviews the physics, indications, techniques, and documented outcomes to date.

The effect of three sessions shock wave therapy on spasticity and range of motion of lower limb in stroke patients
Background: Spasticity is a common motor impairment in patients with stroke that not only has a negative impact on the patient’s quality of life but also has high economic burdens for society. Recently the application of shock wave therapy has attracted considerable attention as a safe and effective method in treatment of spasticity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the eff...
متن کاملExtracorporeal shock wave therapy for the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis: indications, protocol, intermediate results, and a comparison of results to fasciotomy.
A review of the history, mechanism of action, and application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for chronic plantar fasciitis is presented. The results of 40 feet treated with this modality are reviewed after a mean follow-up time of 8.4 months. All procedures were performed under intravenous sedation and local infiltrative anesthesia. An electrohydraulic shock wave with a mean of 20.6 kV co...
متن کاملEffects of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy on Muscle Spasticity in Post-Stroke Patients: An Ultrasonography and Clinical-Base Study
Purpose: To investigate the effect of single session Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) over the ankle plantar flexor muscles on the spasticity, muscle architecture, and gait in chronic stroke patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental, single group study had a repeated measures design. A total of 17 post-stroke patients were selected by convenience sampling method, and received 2000 sho...
متن کاملComparison of radial versus focused extracorporeal shock waves in plantar fasciitis using functional measures.
BACKGROUND Recent literature shows evidence for effective treatment for plantar fasciitis using either focused or radial shock waves. Up to now no research has been available which compares these different procedures. We hypothesized (H(0) Hypothesis) that for plantar fasciitis, outcomes following focused or radial shock wave treatment were equal. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this pilot study, 3...
متن کاملExtracorporeal shock wave therapy for chronic painful heel syndrome: a prospective, double blind, randomized trial assessing the efficacy of a new electromagnetic shock wave device.
Published data describing the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for the treatment of plantar heel pain provide conflicting results, and optimal treatment guidelines are yet to be determined. To assess the efficacy and safety of extracorporeal shockwave therapy compared with placebo in the treatment of chronic painful heel syndrome with a new electromagnetic device, we undertook a pr...
